How Did BRTI Start?

The Boston Resident Training Institute (BRTI) began in November 2005 after a group of public housing leaders attended a training on tenant participation laws. Tenant participation laws give us the right to participate in decisions that affect our housing, but can be difficult to assert. The founding leaders of BRTI understood the challenges facing residents and recognized the need for training to help residents assert their rights and become effective leaders.

Since 2005, the BRTI has worked to build a grassroots, resident-led institution to educate leaders in Boston’s 65 public housing developments. These leaders have volunteered countless hours to create trainings that speak to the needs of residents.

BRTI deeply believes that education developed by, with, and for residents is key to building and sustaining tenant groups.

When residents can govern effectively, there will be greater civic engagement, stronger communities and stronger policies.
